This has been a rough week. December 16, 2014 – I lost my Grandaddy. He has had a hard fight. Several years ago he acquired a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) when he fell, judging a hunting competition. He went down the ladder forward instead of backwards, like you’re supposed to. He was fine right after that but then as the day progressed, he stopped talking as well, couldn’t walk, etc. That started several years of hospitals, assisted living facilities, etc. He finally got to come home and lived with his wife, my grandmother, with nursing care at home. The first time in several years that he got to travel, which he loved, was when he came to my graduation in August. That was such a gift!
Grandad got to meet and love Makiko, which was great. My grandparents grew up without service dogs around and so initially they weren’t as comfortable with Makiko going to different restaurants, etc., but eventually they learned that 1) it is socially acceptable, 2) they are legally allowed to be there and 3) she helps me so much.
I have been a bit of a wreck this week. I usually can leave work at work, and home life at home. But on December 17th, the day after Grandad passed, I could not do this. I cried, a lot, I lost composure over small things, my boss saw me cry… it was rough. Thank GOD I had Makiko to get me through this week. She knows when I’m upset and comes to me more, she gets really really close to me when we sleep, etc. She is my angel.02/
Rest in peace, Grandaddy. I love you.
