My vision is an absolute mess but that’s a story for a different time. I need to start learning to do things more with my ears and less with my eyes since they really aren’t that reliable nowadays.
When my eyes get tired, I already listen to some textbooks and other things instead of read them but I have been displeased with listening to them through the speaker of either my Mac or my IPhone. Don’t get me wrong, they both have good speakers but it just bothers me most of the time for some reason. So off and on for the past couple of years I have been looking for good headphones. I borrow some of my boyfriend’s quite a bit that are the traditional headphones that go over the ear, have that strap that goes over your head, and are quite large. I like those but they aren’t that transportable. I want something that I can bring with me everywhere and not be so much IN YOUR FACE, or rather in everybody else’s face. I want something a little more discrete. That lead me to earbuds. I needed earbuds that fit comfortably and I have never been able to find ones that fit comfortably because my ears are SO small. That led me to look for headphones that have the in-the-ear earbud but also have the clip-on that goes around the ear. I looked online and at different stores and none of them seemed to fit what I was looking for. I need ones that aren’t super IN YOUR FACE and believe me, there are some earbuds even that are IN YOUR FACE. I need ones that have a volume control, iPod control, and call control. I need ones that have earbuds that fit well into my ear, don’t hurt, and don’t fall out easily. I was telling one of my best friends who is also visually impaired about this and she showed me the ones she had. Now, just a weird fact about me, ear wax and most things about ears GROSS me out to no end. That is one of the reasons I couldn’t ever become an audiologist or work where I would be handling a lot of hearing aids or instruments that went in ones ear. It literally digusts me so bad that it ruled out a whole career path that I was interested in. I’m glad it did because I found my love, but just saying. Okay, so I got off on a small tangent. So I was telling my friend about my dilemma and she let me try on hers. I had to, of course, clean the earbuds off and everything even though they were already clean. Guess what?! They worked beautifully and had everything that I was looking for. I went to Best Buy and bought them and LOVE them.
They are called “Sony Earbud Headphones,” Model: MDREX100IPUB. They are angled so they go into your ear at a perfect position. They come with four different size earbuds: SS (Extra Small), Small, Medium, and Large. They have a volume control, a center button that stops/plays/fast forwards/rewinds music, the center button also can activate Siri, and the volume control button also has the mic on the back of it. There is a tactile bump on the “Volume Up” button which is great for individuals with visual impairments. The left and right ears are different and the cord that trails down from the left ear side has the volume control, and that is a great way to tell Right from Left. They have a cord control piece that allows you to wrap the cord up so you can easily keep it at its length or shorten/lengthen it. The sound is beautiful, the earbuds fit really nicely, and they don’t fall out of my ears. Here is a picture:
The packaging says they only work for iPhone/iPad/iPods but they work just fine on my Mac computer and the volume controls work with it too. An added plus!
Just wanted to let you all know what headphones ultimately worked for me and I hope they continue to work just as well as they have today. I am super pleased. 🙂
